Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Agdz Oasis – Zagora Oasis

Our journey today from the hotel or riad takes us into the southern part of the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’ Tichka Pass – one of the most scenic drives in Morocco.  We cross these mountains after climbing to 7145 feet above sea level to get to Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah.  Here we will visit the most important World Heritage Site in Morocco since 1987, according to UNESCO.  Our tour guide will share some of the history of this kasbah, including referencing scenes from famous productions filmed here:  Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Prince of Persia and Game of Thrones. Ouarzazate is just 11 miles from the Kasbah Taourirt.  Then we cross the lunar landscapes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains before reaching Agdz Oasis, followed by driving along the Draa Valley with its palm groves and the old tribal Ksour (fortified villages).  Zagora Oasis is our last stop today, a site with over 100,000 palms.

Day 2: Zagora – Tamagroute – Erg Chegaga

This morning we drive 18 miles south of Zagora to explore Tamegroute, situated on the Draa River and the location of one of the oldest, largest, iconic libraries of the kingdom.  Driving along the Draa Valley to M’hamid, we arrive at a vast plateau with a dramatic view of the huge Chigaga sand dune, which appears along the horizon.  This is the site of our camel trek to immerse ourselves in experiencing one of the best existing sand dune areas, followed by witnessing the sunset from a prominent dune.  Tonight we stay in an Amazigh* camp with its star-filled skies.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Marrakech

The final day we journey through the Erg Chigaga Dunes and the vast off-road Foum Zguid.  Afterward we drive to the Amazigh village of Taznakht, home of highly skilled artizans, including many women’s associations that make the famous Amazigh carpets.  These carpets feature their distinctive and prized production techniques – weaving, knotting and embroidering.  We again head through the High Atlas Mountains, ending our tour in Marrakech.
